How to Determine if a Dream is Prophetic

Have you ever had a dream that came true just as you dreamed it? Have you ever had a very disturbing dream that you felt was a portent of things to come? Have you ever dreamed something wonderful, thinking it would happen, and then it didn’t?

Can dreams predict the future? Are they glimpses into the future?

I’ve experienced some dreams that definitely came true. I remember one such dream where I was driving away from my house and looked in my rear view mirror, only to see my trunk was up and blocking my view.

The next day as I left for school I glanced quickly at my trunk and it was fine, but when I started driving I looked in the rear view mirror and the trunk was all the way up! I had to pull over and close it and continue on my way.

The dream I had came true exactly as I had dreamed it. Then I sat there wondering why I had the dream. It wasn’t a significant event in my life. I figured whoever was in charge of sending prophetic dreams on the other side made some kind of error.

Still, I thought it was cool that I was able to dream the future.

This concerned me, however, because then I started to wonder which dreams were prophecies and which weren’t.

Have you ever dreamed the end of the world? I’ve had that dream probably a hundred times. It’s devastating and frightening, but so far it’s never actually happened.

So how can you tell if a dream is a warning of things to come or if it’s just a “regular” dream?

In my vast experience with dreams and portents, you can’t. There is no concrete way to tell if something you dream is going to come true or not.

I have not found a pattern to the dreams that did come true versus the dreams that didn’t.

They were not more intense. They did not repeat themselves for emphasis. They did not come with any special sensation or awareness in the dream. They were not prefaced by a spirit saying “Pay attention, this is going to happen!”

So I’ve learned to not worry about the dreams that seem to portend a scary future, because that would put me in a state of fear for days, waiting for doom to descend upon us.

I get a lot of emails from people who are afraid that something they dreamed is going to happen. They want me to tell them if the dream was prophetic.

You can’t live your life in fear that something you dreamed is going to come true, because most of the time it won’t. You don’t want to give power to something that scares you, especially if it’s not even going to happen.

Control what you can and leave the rest. If something does happen, react as best you can to mitigate the repercussions.
