14 Ways to Find Joy When You Thought It Was Gone Forever

When was the last time you felt joy in your life? Do you feel like every day you are just going through the motions of life – surviving, but not really thriving?

Are you looking forward to anything coming up in your life? Are you excited about anything right now?

Does life seem bleak? Are you on autopilot?

Sometimes it can feel like joy has passed you by, and you’re never going to experience it again.

But you can’t just wait for something good to happen to you. You have to sow some seeds so you can reap the fruits of your labor. You have to take action and set things in motion so that joy comes back into your life.

Here are 14 ways to find joy again.

Find a new hobby

Use your free time to start a new hobby. Delve into something you’ve always wanted to try. Maybe it’s skydiving or maybe it’s quilting. Maybe it’s learning to play the violin, or building a garden.

When was the last time you tried something new and fun? Make a list of potential hobbies, pick one or two, and start playing around with them a bit.

Pick up an old hobby

Think back to your childhood. What did you love to do when you were a kid? Did you build model rockets? Fly kites? Do science experiments? Did you play baseball in the street with your neighbors? Or perhaps you loved baking?

Think back to a time in your life when you did something that brought you joy. See if you can find a way to bring it back to life.

Make a new friend

When was the last time you made a new friend? Find people who like doing what you like doing and do it together. That will bring a whole new energy into your life. You’ll look forward to doing activities together.

Reconnect with an old friend

Think back to someone you loved hanging out with when you were younger. How cool would it be to find them on social media or through mutual friends and see what they’re up to. Make the rounds – reconnect with a bunch of old friends. Maybe a new friendship can spring from an old friendship.

Help others

One of the easiest ways to bring some joy into your life is to bring joy into the lives of others. Help a friend you know is going through tough times. Volunteer with a group doing good work in the community. Be a Big Brother or Big Sister to a child in need. Entertain at a retirement home. This creates connection and gratitude and it permeates your soul in the most remarkable ways.

Fall in love

If you haven’t fallen in love lately, give it a shot. Romantic love generates oxytocin in your brain which is a feel-good chemical. If you’ve been single for a while consider opening yourself to falling in love. Connection and love bring joy.

Remove toxic people from your life

Take an inventory of the people and situations in your life. Who or what is bringing you down? Are there people or situations you dread in your life? Those are joy-robbers. Eliminate what you can. Remove toxic people and step away from toxic situations or habits. This will immediately raise your vibration and make your days more pleasant.

Fight for a cause

Plug into something you want to see in the world and help bring it about. Work with others who want the same thing and find creative, effective ways to manifest it. Working on a cause that is near and dear to your heart will give your life meaning. As you make progress, this will create joy in your life and connect you with like-minded people.

Learn something new

Learning and education don’t need to ever stop. You don’t have to be in school to continue learning new things. Pick a subject that interests you, get some books, browse some websites, and immerse yourself in learning something you never knew. Connect with others learning the same thing and share your ideas.

Set an audacious goal

Do something that thrills and excites you and is just outside your comfort zone. Set a goal to climb a tall mountain and train for it. Set a goal to do open mic night at the comedy club and work on your material. Set a goal to lose 50 pounds and experiment with ways to accomplish it. Take an improv class and do at least one show. Sing in front of an audience. Setting a huge goal and working on it keeps your soul alive.

Travel

A lot of people find joy in visiting new places. If you can afford to travel, start picking places and planning your trips. If money is tight, take day trips by car or be a tourist in your own city. Explore your planet a little and enjoy the wonder of this Earth.

Get spiritual

Spend some time contemplating your existence and plugging into the universal energies that surround you. Let love and light into your soul and then share that joy with others. Meditate. Learn to speak to your spirit guides, angels, and higher self. Deepen your connection with yourself and the universe.

Laugh

In a lot of readings I do with clients their spirit guides tell them to laugh more often. It’s like putting fuel in the gas tank. How long has it been since you had a good belly laugh? How did it make you feel? Hang around with friends who make you laugh or go to comedy clubs or watch amusing YouTube videos. Be silly. Watch others being silly. Have fun!

Spend time with loved ones

Family and friends are what make the journey pleasant. Who you spend time with matters. Take an inventory of the people in your life who make you feel good and make plans to spend time with them more often. Break bread together, go for walks, bake cookies, have deep conversations about life, the universe, and everything. Share fun experiences together.

Life is meant to be joyful. If you’re not feeling the joy you must make space for it in your life and invite it in. Make a list of all the things you’ve always wanted to do and start working on them when you have time. Having something to look forward to or working on manifesting a long-term goal will bring you joy. Don’t wait until you’re retired to figure out what brings you joy. Take joy on the entire journey.
