A reader sent me this question recently:
“What if what we desire in life is not the same as what our spirit guides want for us? If we go against their wishes, do we end up with an unsatisfying life? Are we punished for it?”
Imagine you are the President of a company. Your spirit guides are your vice presidents, and your higher self is the Owner of the company.
The Owner decides to start a company. Translation: Your higher self decides to incarnate on Earth.
The Owner creates the company (your body), gives it some intentions, and poof, you’re born. You are the President of this company and you have directions encoded in your spiritual DNA that are related to what the Owner designed the company to do.
Your Owner doesn’t want you to work alone, so they hire some Vice Presidents in charge of various divisions of the company who will analyze how the company is doing and make recommendations to you, the President, to act on. For example you might have a VP of Relationships, Careers, Health, Finance, Spirituality, Leisure, etc. The VPs know the company’s directives so they try to steer the company in that direction.
But you’re the President and, at the end of the day, you can do whatever you like and whatever you think will make the company the best it can be. That could mean listening to your VPs, or it could mean going in another direction. Your VPs work for you, not the other way around.
The Owner is happy for you to take the company in whatever direction makes you happy, so even if you stray from the initial ideal of the company, the Owner is not upset by that. However, the Owner, if asked, might remind you what the original intention of the company was when it was first created.
Free will is yours to wield for good or for ill.
I would say that most people, after they incarnate, don’t perfectly follow the “script” their higher self laid out for them. That’s perfectly fine, and it’s perfectly normal.
Once you get here, you are bombarded by a lot of input. Your family, friends, co-workers, and children all influence the decisions you make. Your environment, the political climate, your personal experiences, fears, hopes, and dreams will all impact what you eventually decide to do with your life.
I think we would be hard-pressed to find someone living in perfect sync with their initial life intention.
So, rest assured, no one is judging you for the decisions you make and where you are steering your company.
It is wise to listen to your guides, to check in with your higher self, to give some conscious thought to where you are steering the ship, but if all you want to do is let the river take you downstream while you enjoy the view, that’s perfectly fine.
